My Facebook response to those people who think teachers should be allowed to have guns in class:

20 babies shot dead today, and that’s just one story that made the news. I guarantee you giving more people guns isn’t the answer.

I’ll only say this, because I knew that was the response from the other side on the issue. The Constitution allows us to have our own firearms. There’s no debating that, and I don’t believe that should be changed. The reason I posted this is because I saw at least ten statuses that said something similar to “teachers should have personal guns in their classrooms.” …Teachers… should have personal guns… in their classrooms… what in the hell?

Several states, like New York, don’t even allow Police Officers, cops— trained men and women who protect us and carry guns for a living— to enter public schools with firearms. Who in their right mind would give them to teachers? People were already worried about their children’s safety in school long before this happened, and in no way does placing a firearm— concealed or not— in rooms with millions of children across the country make them any safer than what those babies were today.

As far as legislation goes; you’re right, if a man or woman wanted to kill people, they would if they had the means, and not much would stop them. But that is exactly why we have laws that say it is wrong to kill, and there are consequences for doing so. You don’t stop or ignore making safety laws just because there are people who’ll still break them. Legislation like gun control is and/or should be set up so that if folks decide to shoot and murder innocent people, the law will make it that much harder to do it.
